Welcome to the Weeshuis

The Elisabeth Weeshuis Museum is the city museum of Culemborg. Here you’ll find stories about the city, its past, and the former orphanage. With artistic treasures, a collection of paintings, historic interiors, and interactive elements, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Discover it all in the monumental building and the adjoining garden in the heart of Culemborg’s historic city center.

400 years as an orphanage and 100 years as a museum

The Culemborg orphanage is the oldest orphanage in the Netherlands built specifically for orphans. Between 1560 and 1952, more than 700 orphaned children grew up here. Since 1928, the city museum has also been housed here. Portraits of counts and countesses gleam, and silver bowls shine. But at the same time, you can hear the voices of the orphans, telling stories about their childhoods. The social story of the children growing up here and the historical story of the city form the common thread throughout your visit.
