Bronze gate bell

1558
maker unknown

The lives of the orphan children followed a fixed daily routine. In the early years of the orphanage's existence, this included attending Mass in the chapel for everyone. The children were likely called to come by the ringing of this bell. The bronze bell was cast in 1558, two years before the orphanage opened. On the rim of the bell is inscribed in Latin: "The word of God endures forever." In 1578, the orphanage became Protestant. Masses were no longer held in the chapel. The bell was hung in the square and connected by a string to the gate at the street. In this way, it served as the orphanage's doorbell until the twentieth century.
