Memorial Panel of Elisabeth of Culemborg

1555
creator unknown, workshop of Jan van Scorel

Elisabeth of Culemborg (1475 – 1555) was a wealthy woman. When she died, her legacy was used to found the orphanage in Culemborg, among other things. During her life, Elisabeth married twice. At the age of 26, she married Jan of Luxembourg (c. 1477–1508), an influential man at the Habsburg court. After Jan's death, Elisabeth married one of his friends, Antoon of Lalaing (1480–1540). They had no children. In the painting, we see Jan, Elisabeth and Antoon depicted in a pious posture with hands folded in prayer. All three are wearing expensive clothing. The men wear the Order of the Golden Fleece around their necks. Elisabeth wears a mourning cap on her head.
