Silver lavabo dish

1646
Johan Pagendarm

This so-called "lavabo dish" originates from the Old Catholic Church in Culemborg. Water was caught in such a bowl during a ceremonial purification ritual, the liturgical handwashing. This splendid silver dish was crafted in what is known as the auricular style (kwabstijl). A style with imaginative organic forms that became popular among Dutch silversmiths in the first half of the 17th century. The silversmith Johan Pagendarm, who worked in Amsterdam, made the dish in 1646. Lavabo dishes often come as a set with a ewer. This dish is considered one of the most remarkable of its kind from the mid-17th century.
